Remarkably, three of those finals occurred in three consecutive seasons (2015-2017), with either the Sharks or Cowboys appearing in the grand final in each of those three years and both teams winning maiden NRL premierships during that span.

Golden point has been needed to decide two of those, while one of the biggest referee blunders NRL history overshadowed a Sharks win back in 2013.

Ahead of their match up at Allianz Stadium this weekend, foxsports.com.au delves deep into the crazy finals history between the two sides.

TALE OF THE TAPE

Cronulla and North Queensland enter this game in differing form.

The Sharks have lost two of their past three, including a heavy loss to the Storm in a qualifying final last week when they were blown off the park in the second half.

The Cowboys on the other hand are one of the hottest teams in the NRL, having won four straight games.

They booked their ticket to the second week of the finals with a gutsy 28-16 win over the Knights last Saturday.

While the Cowboys have had the better of the Sharks in finals games, Cronulla have proven to be somewhat of a bogey team for North Queensland.

In the last 13 meetings between the two sides (including finals), the Sharks have won 11 of those, including eight straight between 2018-2022, which was broken in spectacular fashion.

It’s worth noting that besides the Broncos, the Cowboys have faced the Sharks more than any other team in its history 20-year history.

2022 QUALIFYING FINAL – Cowboys 32 Sharks 30

The second-placed Sharks hosted the third-placed Cowboys in a qualifying final in front of a sold out Shark Park.

Barring just a handful of the Cowboys faithful, that packed out crowd would leave disappointed after Valentine Holmes nailed a massive 45-metre two point field goal after 93 minutes of champagne football to defeat his former side.

It was an even contest throughout, with the teams locked at 18 heading into the sheds at halftime.

The Sharks forged ahead to lead 30-22 when Will Kennedy crossed in the 66th minute.

Up 30-22 with nine minutes remaining and a partisan crowd behind them, Cronulla were basically Black Caviar odds to win.

However, a sin bin to Connor Tracey in the 72nd minute turned the game on its head.

Holmes would nail the ensuing penalty goal to trim the margin to six before Jason Taumalolo scored a stunning try with 22 seconds left to send the game into extra time.

Golden point was needed after a result couldn’t be determined following ten minutes of extra time.

Three minutes into golden point, Holmes, who won a premiership with Cronulla in 2016, stepped up and made the game-deciding play.

It would be the first of four straight finals losses for Cronulla under Craig Fitzgibbon, with the second of those coming the following week after a 38-12 defeat to Souths.

The Cowboys would progress to a home preliminary final, and despite leading the Eels by eight points in the second half, coughed up that lead in a 24-20 loss.

2017 ELIMINATION FINAL – Cowboys 15 Sharks 14

The Sharks’ premiership defence ended in heartbreaking fashion after a Michael Morgan field goal in extra time sunk the Sharks.

Sharks halfback and future Cowboy Chad Townsend opened the scoring with a 2nd minute try – the only one of the first half.

Teams exchanged tries in the second half, with an Ethan Lowe penalty goal in the 76th minute tying the game at 14.

Cronulla had the right to be hard down by in this one, given the penalty the Cowboys received for a Sharks attempted strip should not have been awarded after replays showed North Queensland knocked the ball on cold.

The Sharks had a chance to hit the front in the dying minutes but a James Maloney field goal was charged down and then, captain Paul Gallen lost the ball in a try-scoring attempt just one metre from the line.

Because of the Cowboys’ 2015 grand final win ending with a field goal in golden point, the NRL changed the rules from therein that in finals games, 10 minutes of extra time must be played before any golden point period.

Michael Morgan, who was in the midst of a magical run of form, kicked the field goal from ten metres out to give North Queensland a 15-14 lead on the final play of the first extra time period.

The visitors would hold tough over the next five minutes to progress to Week 2 of the finals.

Despite starting the finals in eighth spot, the Cowboys would win three in a row to make the grand final, where they would lose to a dominant Storm outfit.

2016 PRELIMINARY FINAL – Sharks 32 Cowboys 20

En route to an historic grand final win, the Sharks would meet the Cowboys in the 2016 prelim, hoping to atone from the embarrassing loss 12 months earlier.

This time around, it would be the Sharks to outplay the Cowboys, with veteran playmaker James Maloney starring.

Maloney scored two second half tries to put the game to bed, including an epic 60-metre intercept to give Cronulla a 32-6 lead with 15 minutes to play.

With the Cowboys attacking to save the game, Maloney threw one outstretched hand out to somehow catch a Gavin Cooper pass before racing away to ice the game despite being chased by several North Queensland defenders.

The Cowboys scored three tries to add some respectability to the scoreboard but make no mistake, this was a procession from the Sharks.

It would set up a grand final between Cronulla and Melbourne, which the Sharks would win 14-12, delivering the club their first ever NRL premiership win.

“Turn your porch lights off because we are coming home with the trophy,” Paul Gallen exclaimed moments after the grand final win, referencing a famous quote from legendary coach Jack Gibson which said: “Waiting for Cronulla to win a premiership is like leaving the porch lamp on for Harold Holt”.

2015 SEMI FINAL – Cowboys 39 Sharks 0

It was a one-act affect in Week 2 of the 2015 finals series, with the Cowboys dismantling the Sharks on their way to a maiden NRL premiership.

Much like the set up this season but with the teams switched, in 2015, the Cowboys would lose their first match of the finals series with a 16-12 defeat at the hands of the Broncos.

Meanwhile, the Sharks kept their season alive with a 28-12 win against Souths in an elimination final.

That set up what most believed would be an even game in Townsville, but it was anything but, with the Cowboys dominating from pillar to post to set up a preliminary final against the Storm.

Of course, North Queensland would win that game before meeting the Broncos again in the grand final.

This time, the Cowboys turned the tables on the qualifying finals loss when Johnathan Thurston kicked a field goal in golden point to end one of the greatest grand finals in NRL history.

2013 ELIMINATION FINAL – Sharks 20 Cowboys 18

The first elimination final of the 2013 finals series was plagued by one of the most controversial refereeing faux pas in NRL history.

In the seventh minute of the final at Allianz Stadium, Sharks winger Beau Ryan scored a try on the seventh tackle after all the officials somehow misjudged the tackle count.

The Sharks would win the game by two points, so the try proved to be critical.

Cowboys coach Neil Henry was scathing post-game.

“How could it happen? It’s a schoolboy error. It’s something you don’t see out there in QLD Cup, you don’t see at the local A Grade,” Henry said.

“They’ve proven a couple of years in a row that they’re (refeeres) not up to it.”

Captain Johnathan Thurston added: “On the biggest stage, they crumble.”

The NRL made no excuses for the “human error”, apologising to the Cowboys.

“We’ve got six or seven people that count the tackle count in every game and all the failsafes failed at the same time,” then NRL boss Dave Smith said.

“That’s the most disappointing aspect of it, it is not a single error. It’s a whole match official crew who can hold their hand up and admit we let down our rugby league public at that moment.”

It was the second straight season the Cowboys were cruelled by a officiating blunder in the finals after a knock on from Manly’s Kieran Foran was missed in the lead-up to a Sea Eagles try in a 2012 semi-final loss.

After Cronulla’s controversial win in 2013, they would be knocked out the following week in the semis by the Sea Eagles.
